Volunteer

If you enjoy working outdoors and volunteering, the City of Georgetown’s Urban Forestry department could use your time and talents!  Spreading mulch around newly planted trees, removing invasive bushes and trees along the bank of the San Gabriel River and gardening in the Sunken Garden in San Gabriel Park are all activities that need volunteers to keep our city beautiful.  The Urban Forester will organize volunteer activities for large or small groups for weekend or weekday times.  Please contact the Urban Forester 30 days in advance to organize activities for your group.  The Urban Forester organizes public tree plantings during the year; usually one in the fall and one in the spring.  Groups can not hold their own tree planting due to certain requirements, but your group is encouraged to volunteer for the public tree plantings organized by the Urban Forester.

If you want to add your name to an email list for potential volunteers or are trying to organize a work day contact Heather Brewer, Urban Forester for the City of Georgetown, at heather.brewer@georgetown.org or call

Trail Tamers

When:  Every Tuesday from 1:30pm – 4:30pm
-As the group grows and the days get hotter we can change the date and time to best meet the groups desires.  The group will discontinue once the temperatures get oppressively hot and pick back up next fall.
Where: Meet at the Rivery Park parking lot (1448 Rivery Blvd.)  The entrance is across the road from Home Depot.
-Once we finish working at this location we will move to another location.  It will take us many work days at this location.  The group will work in the same location on the trail as one cohesive group; not spread out as individuals.
What: Remove invasive trees and plants along the San Gabriel River trail and stack them for parks staff to haul off.
Who:  Anyone who wants to help improve the San Gabriel River trail; tree knowledge is not mandatory!
Bring: Mandatory – closed toe shoes, long pants, gloves, and bottled water.  Optional – loppers and hand saw.

Showing up for one work day does not mean you are committed to show up every time.  Just come when you are available to and feel up to it.  My hope is that this can eventually be a self governed group of volunteers.  There will be no business meetings or typical club requirements. The removals will have to be done with hand tools.  Having volunteers using chainsaws on city property isn’t allowed.  Volunteers will be focusing on small invasive trees nothing a chainsaw is needed for.
